This cement is suitable for use in concrete exposed to sulfate attack and is therefore known as sulfate-resistant cement.
This type of cement is used when concrete is exposed to severe sulfate conditions. It is primarily applied when the soil or groundwater in contact with a concrete structure contains high concentrations of sulfate salts. According to the Iranian Concrete Code (ABA), all concrete structures located in environments with highly sulfate-contaminated soil or water must use Type V cement.
Limitations of Use:
- If chloride ions are present along with sulfate ions, this cement should be used with caution and only after necessary testing.
- Type V cement has a slower setting time than ordinary Portland cement, and its 3-, 7-, and 28-day compressive strengths are lower than other Portland cements. Therefore, it has limitations in structures requiring high early or ultimate strength.
- It should be used with caution in cold weather conditions.
Characteristics of Type V Cement:
- Suitable for dam construction, provided there is no risk of chloride attack.
- Applicable in corrosive and humid environments, including contact with groundwater and flowing water.
- Suitable for foundations, marine structures, and structures in highly aggressive environments.
- Appropriate for relatively mass concrete placements, foundations, and irrigation canals.
- Provides high resistance against sulfate attack, making it suitable for concrete pipes, water channels, and sewage systems.
- Improves concrete durability under adverse environmental conditions.
